Overview

Long before the coast wakes, a van turns west — away from the Red Sea, toward the river that made Egypt. You've come a long way to stand in Luxor, and today ancient Thebes is yours: temples the size of cities, a valley full of hidden kings, and a slow green island on the Nile.

At Karnak you walk into a forest of stone columns so vast that people fall quiet without meaning to. After lunch you step onto a felucca and the day changes pace — canvas snaps overhead, the water turns glassy, and the noise of the road disappears as you drift toward Banana Island, where palms lean over the Nile exactly as they did for the pharaohs who sailed here before you.

Across the river lies the reason kings chose this place. In the Valley of the Kings they cut their tombs deep into the rock and painted the walls with everything they hoped to carry onward. You climb down into Tutankhamun's chamber — a boy who ruled and died young, forgotten for three thousand years until a single lamp found him again. Standing there, you understand what it was all for: not gold, but the refusal to be forgotten.

By the time the Colossi of Memnon throw their long evening shadows and the van turns back toward the coast, Luxor has stopped being a name on a map. You've walked where a civilisation staked everything on being remembered — and you'll carry a little of that home with you across the desert.
