Overview
There is a reason you keep the Pyramids for a proper day out, rather than an afternoon squeezed between the beach and dinner. They are a long way from the Red Sea coast — and from Safaga, one of the quietest harbours on it, further still. That distance is part of the pilgrimage. Well before dawn, an air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel and turns inland, trading the still water of the marina for the open desert road to Cairo.
By the time the city wakes, you are in it. The drive back to Safaga is the longest stretch of the day, and you will not mind it. You will sit with the quiet, and the size of what you have seen, and the odd, permanent feeling that the beach you came for has quietly changed places with the desert. Ask anyone what they did in Egypt and they will mention the sea. You will mention the day you stood beneath the oldest wonder still standing on Earth.
